Consultants vs sleep schools
This guide is general information only and isn't a substitute for medical advice. If you're concerned about your child's health, or they're unwell, please see a doctor.
Both exist to get your family sleeping. They go about it very differently, and in Australia the cost difference can be enormous, in both directions.
What a private sleep consultant does
Works with you in your own home (in person or online), builds a plan around your child and your parenting style, and supports you while you carry it out. You stay in your routine, in your house, and you're the one doing the settling, with coaching. Packages range from a single consult to multi-week support.
What a sleep school does
A residential or day-stay program where you and your baby attend together, usually for several days, with nurses and staff on hand around the clock. In Australia, many are run through public early parenting centres, and a stay can be partly or fully covered through the public system or private health insurance, usually with a GP or child health nurse referral. Private sleep school programs also exist.
How to think about the choice
- Severity.Sleep schools shine when everything has been tried, nobody has slept in months, and parents are at breaking point. The residential setting is a circuit-breaker. A consultant suits the far more common "this one thing is broken" situation.
- Whose habits change where.A consultant changes sleep in the place your child actually sleeps. Sleep school progress sometimes needs re-establishing once you're back home, so ask any program how they handle the transition.
- Waiting and access. Public early parenting centres can have weeks-to-months waitlists and are concentrated in the big cities. Consultants can usually start within days, anywhere with an internet connection.
- Cost.A referred public program may cost you very little. A private consultant is out-of-pocket but far cheaper than a private residential stay. If money is the constraint, ask your GP what you're eligible for before ruling anything out.
Where to start
If you're unsure, your child health nurse is the free first stop. They'll tell you whether your situation sounds like a referral to an early parenting program or a job for private support. If you already know you want one-on-one help on your own timeline, go straight to comparing consultants.
They're not rivals
Plenty of families use both: a sleep school stay to break the worst of it, then a consultant to keep it working at home. And a good consultant will tell you when your situation is beyond their scope and a referral is the right move. That honesty is worth paying for.
